Questions about take-home pay
How is take-home pay calculated?
Start with your gross salary, take off any pension contribution, then deduct income tax, employee National Insurance and student loan repayments. What is left is your take-home (net) pay.
What is the personal allowance for 2026/27?
It is £12,570 and is frozen until April 2031. You pay no income tax on this amount. It shrinks by £1 for every £2 you earn over £100,000 and is gone at £125,140.
How much National Insurance do employees pay?
Employees pay 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% on anything above that.
Is Scottish income tax different?
Yes. Scotland has six bands from 19% to 48%, so people on middle and higher incomes usually pay more than in the rest of the UK. National Insurance is the same everywhere.
How do student loan repayments work?
You repay 9% of earnings above your plan threshold (Plan 1 £26,900, Plan 2 £29,385, Plan 4 £33,795, Plan 5 £25,000). A postgraduate loan takes 6% above £21,000.
